We drove Highway 12 in southern Washington, through the Cascades and just south of Mt. Rainier along the Cowlitz River, towards the coast. This was during the Government shutdown. So happy to see that the viewpoint to Mt. Rainier wasn’t closed (wink, wink).
Campground: Cape Disappointment State Park
Location: Ilwaco, Washington
Site: 101 for a few nights and then 18 for a week
Cost: $22 for dry camping on site 101 and then $31.30 for FHU on site 18
Services: Dry camp (site 101) and FHU (site 18)
Comments: A wonderful place. Site 18 sits right by the beach and was a lovely spot with lots of sun. Site 101 was very small and full shade with trees with low branches. It took us a few attempts to back into that site without damaging or scratching the roof. Lots of hiking on the beach, two lighthouses to visit, the cute quaint charming town of Ilwaco nearby, and the mouth of the Columbia River to observe day after day. A slice of heaven. No driving on the beach or campfires at the campground buts lots of other activities within the state park.
Long Beach Peninsula is close by with lots of activities.
