We headed north on highway 87 to 191 from Billings via Roundup to the Upper Missouri River Break National Monument area.
Along the Missouri River on Highway 191 is the James Kipp Recreation Area which has a campground and boat launch.
Campground: James Kipp National Recreation Area
Location: Winifred, Montana (further east along the Missouri River)
Site: A-5 (Back-in)
Cost: $6 (that’s with 50% off with our interagency pass)
Services: Dry camping
Comments: A beautiful campground along the Missouri River. We were the only ones staying there besides a host over by the launch.
The campground has 3 loops, loop A, loop B, and loop C. We stayed in loop A. Loop B appeared to have sites that were double wide with 2 picnic tables. Loop C had sites more in the open but closer to the highway. This provided more sun and more relief from summer mosquitoes.
There is a boat launch next to the campground and is used by fishermen and also by river floaters.
