Downtown RV Park – Watson Lake, Yukon

It was a short drive from our campground at Big Creek to Watson Lake where we wanted to spend the day hanging our sign, doing some laundry, and also a bit of grocery shopping. We passed by the intersection of Highway 37, The Cassiar Highway, known as Junction 37. We drove that road south in previous years when returning from Alaska and absolutely loved it.

Not that much further from Jct 37 is Watson Lake, a small town with a population of around 600 people and known for its infamous Sign Post Forest. More on that later. There is also the Northern Lights Center which is a discovery center with an auditorium and interactive displays that are all about the aurora borealis, AKA northern lights.

There aren’t many options for camping so we selected the Downtown RV Park which is next to the Sign Post Forest. We arrived in the morning and there was NO problem getting a site or being able to check in that early. Thank You. That meant we had time to do some laundry, take a shower, do errands, AND hang our sign up! The RV park is used for large caravans/tours so maybe it may fill up sometimes?

Comments: A typical RV Park in Watson Lake within walking distance of the Sign Post Forest. Their laundry facilities were excellent and the machines actually worked (and the dryer dried – first time ever in 17 years of RV travel)!! And the grocery store is right next to the park!

There is an upper area, where we were, and a lower area and almost all sites were empty. More travelers arrived later in the day. It is basically a big parking lot but offers full hookups and sites very close together but plenty of room to open slides. It is for sale! Here’s your chance!

There is a pressure wash station in the lower area (coin operated) to clean your filthy motorhome and some interesting rocks scattered around.

The Wye Lake Park and boardwalk is directly across the street from the RV Park with 2.5 km of walking trails, interpretive signs, and picnic area and playground.

And then there is the Sign Post Forest!!

It’s a must if you come through Watson Lake to hang your sign, whatever it may be. I believe the Visitor Information Center next to it even provides materials to help your make your sign if you are unprepared. Otherwise, make your own sign and hang it somewhere like people have been doing since 1942. There is plenty of RV parking around the forest in case you are just dropping by for a short visit.
