We headed into Mississippi and passed the NASA John C Stennis Space Center. The INFINITY Science Center is located there and is a museum open to the public and offers a blend of space, Earth science, and engineering and technology content. We would have stopped if we had known about it in advance but before you knew it it was in our rear view mirror. It is a must stop for us the next time we drive through now that we know about it. Shame on me for not doing my research properly!! And before we knew it we were passing by Biloxi and in to Ocean Springs.
The Davis Bayou Campground is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and located in the quaint town of Ocean Springs just east of Biloxi. The main park entrance road was closed when we visited and there was a detour marked. The parks are widening the main entrance road and there was lots of construction going on. The detour was a bit tricky but we managed to not get lost as we made our way through residential sections and narrow roads.
Campground: Davis Bayou Campground – Gulf Islands National Seashore
Location: Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Site: 38 (back-in)
Cost: $11
Services: E/W
Comments: An old, tired campground with lots of trees and some water views. We had a terrific back-in site with a large picnic area and a short path which led to a small slough with nice water views.
The Gulf Islands National Seashore is comprised of the barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi and Florida. They are boat only access but the Davis Bayou Campground is not actually on one of the islands but is on the mainland. The Davis Bayou Campground area has a Visitor Center (with a nice film about the seashore and the islands) and interesting exhibits. There is a fishing pier nearby and a few short hiking and biking tails.
It was rainy and gloomy when we visited but we managed to get out and explore some. We even managed to snag a King Cake at the grocery since it was after Epiphany (Jan 6) and before Fat Tuesday which is the usual King Cake season!! The wonderful Rouse’s market is just a few miles from the campground and a perfect place to pick up some grociers and some King Cake!!
