This morning we departed La Grande, Oregon and headed over the Blue Mountains. This involved driving over Deadmans Pass. It is no problem in the summer but can be quite a difficult drive during a winter snowstorm. It was windy but still warm and a beautiful sunny day. We came into the Tri City area, crossed the Columbia River, and into Washington. As we crossed the Columbia River we had good views of the McNary Lock and Dam.
We exited onto Highway 14 and paralleled the Columbia River and north through wine country and hop country passing Columbia Crest and a variety of fruit producers.
We continued on into Prosser and eventually Yakima with views of Mt Adams and Mt Rainier. Mt Rainier is the tallest mountain in Washington and Mt Adams in the second tallest. Even though Mt Adams hasn’t erupted in over 1,000 years it is still considered an active volcano.
We continued to the Cascade Mountains to Cle Elum for a few nights at Whispering Pines along the Yakima River. Yes, the wind blows gently through the pines and it sounds like they are whispering and with the river running it has a lovely sound….EXCEPT for the roar of I-90!!!
The RV resort has contactless check-in, which we love. You just walk into the lobby and grab your package and proceed to your site. Spiffy!!
It has a great camping store full of RV supplies and other items. It almost rivals Camping World for its’ RV supplies!!
RV Park: Whispering Pines RV Campground

Comments: A nicely maintained RV park with sites of varying sizes and shapes. The RV park land is quite large and is between I-90 and the Yakima River so almost an island unto itself. It IS LOUD with traffic from the interstate. Even though I-90 is hundreds of yards away the river acts like a sound tunnel and brings all the noise straight into the campground. In the middle of the night the traffic noise was bearable even when sleeping with the windows opened. A lovely place but the noise might ensure we won’t return. Our site was large and private and backed onto the river and the river trail.
Not only is there the Yakima River but there is also a small pond with one side being a private beach area for the sites located there and the other side for day use.
There is a lovely River Trail that goes along the Yakima River and leads in one direction to town and the other direction to a large off leash dog area. It is really a lovely place and a great piece of property but too bad about the roaring traffic noise.
And yes, this is my next tire cover! And NO, we didn’t spot Sasquatch!
