Sikanni River Campground and RV Park – Sikanni Chief, British Columbia

We woke up early at our campground along Summit Lake after beautiful, clear weather the day before. This morning was smokey with very low visibility! We could barely see across Summit Lake. We knew there was countless wildfires all over the north but it just depends on how the wind blows if you will encounter it. We also knew that Highway 77 which heads north to Ft. Liard in Northwest Territories had been closed due to wildfires. We decided to head further south toward Fort Nelson and then further south to see if we could get out of the smoke. It was about an hour and a half drive to Fort Nelson and we had very low visibility to medium visibility the whole way AND lots of smoke smell. Life in the north. As we passed Highway 77 we could see it was blocked with only emergency/fire fighter access.

We fueled up in Fort Nelson and continued further south hoping to get out of the smoke. We finally decided to stop about 2 hours further south at Sikanni Chief which is almost the halfway point between Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek. We wanted a power campsite so we could run the A/C and the air purifier due to the heavy smoke. Sikanni River RV Park seemed like the perfect place. It was very hot out and still very smokey.

We checked in and got a site. The woman working in the office could not have been kinder and nicer. The RV park is very simple but very friendly. Notice the campsite map is a basic hand drawn map posted on the window.

Campground: Sikanni River Campground and RV Park
Location: Sikanni Chief, British Columbia (directly southwest of the bridge over Sikanni River)
Site: 5 (back-in)
Cost: $50 (CAD)
Services: FHU
Comments: A nicely run, but simple, RV park on the Alcan highway with sites of varying size, shape, and services.

The sites vary in sizes and types of hookups and some are by the river with nice views along with the lovely sound of the river rushing by.

I spent the afternoon doing laundry. They have one washing machine and one dryer in a locked ATCO trailer. The woman working there simply gives you the key, you use the machines (no coins required), and when you finish you go back and pay her and return the key. I loved it. No change required!!!

The park also has rental cabins and a playground for the kiddies along with a fuel station (no diesel). AND they do sell scoops of ice cream in the store which was much needed on this very hot day!!

The Sikanni Chief River and the Sikanni Chief River bridge are right next to the RV park. The bridge was under maintenance while we were there but the noise did not bother us.

A cute little place even if very simple. We would stay there again.
