While we are boondocking at Clark Dry Lake in Borrego Springs we sit out under our awning and look across the deserted landscape. In the distance we can see some trees, an oasis of sorts. We always try and guess distances when looking far away. Yep, it always looks so close and then when you hike there it is so, so, so far away.
Across the dry lake in Borrego we can see the palm oasis and it looks like a terrific place to hike to. We did this hike last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. The reward when you get there, the shade, is incredible. It is hard to describe to people who aren’t used to spending winters in the southwest desert about how hot and intense the sun can be when temperatures are in the low 70’s. The sun is intense in the desert even at that time of year. You do need skin protection whether it is suntan lotion or hat or long sleeves or all of the above. AND you always need to bring lots of water.
So off we go on the hike that always looks like it should only take about 30 minutes to get there and in reality it takes just under 2 hours, each direction.
Next up, it is getting so hot and the sun is intense. Need lots of water, need shade.
We keep walking as we can see the oasis in the distance but it takes time. Soon we run across some jeep trails with some soft sand and keep walking and keep walking and keep walking. And then comes our reward! Some nice cool sand and some shade. A perfect picnic spot.
After awhile it is time to start the long hike back.
