Another day to take a motorcycle ride and do some hiking. We decided to head to the southern portion of Anza Borrego State Park down by the Carrizo Badlands to Mountain Palm Springs.
It was a beautiful warm day. On the way south on S2 we decided to check out a few other campgrounds for future reference. We stopped first at the Vallecito County Park in San Diego county where there used to be a stage stop. It is right along S2.
The campground was basically empty, it is all dry camping and no generators allowed. It looked quite peaceful and if you were the only ones here you would have lots of privacy.
From there we headed on to Agua Caliente County Park which is just a bit further south on S2. This park had a gate to enter through with a manned office. We told them we just wanted to check out the park and they said no problem and gave us maps and some information. The park was probably half full but had a crowded feel probably because the sites were close together and afforded little privacy. They did have a swimming pool!
Then off to Mountain Palm Springs. We had to turn off the main highway (S2) onto a sand road but no problems with the bike. The trailhead is next to Bow Willow Campground which is part of Anza Borrego State Park. The campground is quite small and is first come first serve. It looks a bit tight and the sites were small but there was one site a big rig looked like it could fit in. It is a long way to drive though to find out there isn’t a site you can fit into.
We parked and did two different hikes from the parking lot. One took us to a small palm oasis and was a short hike, maybe an hour or so. The second hike was quite a bit longer and took us up over rocks and great views to a larger palm oasis. We really, really enjoyed the second hike! We will be back!
