Off to Utah!!
We crossed the border and headed towards Brigham City. As we got closer to Brigham City there were a number of farmers fields on fire presumably prescribed burns. Many farmers do this to remove old thatch and crop residuals and improve the native grasslands and controls the weeds. It wasn’t a windy day so the smoke was pretty steady. At least for awhile.
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is located just to the west of I-15 near Brigham City. It lies where the Bear River flowers into the northeast arm of the Great Sale Lake. This refuge provides critical habitat for migrating birds with over 250 species moving through this area by the millions. The birds stop and rest, feed, and nest before moving on. The refuge consists of almost 80,000 acres of marsh, open water, uplands, and mudflats. There is also a visitor center/education center, 1.5 miles of trails, and a 12-mile auto tour.
We visited the refuge JUST as a big storm was coming in. Perfect timing! NOT! We quickly did the walking trails (almost running them), skipped the auto tour, and spent most of the time indoors visiting the education center.
We walked all the trails and made it back just in time before we got soaking wet.
We ran into the Education Center and spent the next few hours looking at displays and watching the film “Wings of Thunder”.
It really is a terrific bird refuge and we just wished we had been there at a better time of year to see more of the birds AND not have gone during a storm! The peak time is October with close to 130,000 birds counted in 2022. Time to get back to the motorhome and get to our RV park before the storm really blows in!
Brigham City is very close so we drove on to the center of town and on to Perry.
As we got to the KOA it was wet, dreary, dark and the wind was really blowing. The RV Park is actually located in South Perry not far from the infamous Maddox Ranch House. We keep meaning to eat there and still haven’t but it is on our list. The Ranch House is an old-school steakhouse serving skinless friend chicken, bison and seafood in a rustic setting. They also have a drive-in. Every time we drive by the place is packed no matter the time of day.
We got our site and hunkered down and made it through the storm. A few hours later the sun came out and it was like there was never a storm.

Cost: $100.89
Services: FHU
Comments: A lovely RV park with terrific views but only if you get one of the PS sites which offer the full patio like we got.
There were some fields in front of our motorhome that provided terrific views and we also had a swing so we had a “swinging” time!
Some sites offered smaller patios and some even had their own pet yard.
The offer standard pull thru sites and also some very narrow, crowded back-in sites, which we did not want.
Our site was perfect. We had great views, nice patio with BBQ, swing, table and chairs. It meant we did not have to unpack those items from the motorhome which helped because we were only staying there one night. We also wanted to leave bright and early in the morning to tackle the drive through downtown Salt Lake City. Our pull thru site exited right onto the street such that we did not have to drive through the RV park when leaving early in the morning whereby waking fellow campers.
As a typical KOA park they offered ice cream socials in the evenings, kids games/events, animal balloon making trucks, food trucks, and kids playground toys along with their pool.
This KOA was also celebrating their 60 year reunion so they were holding a silent auction with proceeds going to charity. They had quite a number of interesting items being auctioned off.
It really was a lovely KOA in a perfect area which allowed us easy access to Bear River and a good head start in the morning to battle the SLC traffic. It was made better by having a nice big site, perfect weather in the evening, and just an all around great time!
