From Kartchner Caverns State Park we headed south and then west towards Sonoita and then north towards Tucson. On our way we did a bit of boondocking and enjoyed the area.
We headed north on Highway 83 from Sonoita and over to Tucson to Gilbery Ray Campground which is in Tucson Mountain Park across from Old Tucson (movie studio and theme park).
Our site was in the A loop and after passing the Registration Office there are a variety of roads and signs leading you to your correct loop. Pay attention as it can be a bit confusing and it is easy to miss your turn. Loops A, B, and C are reservation only and Loop H is first come first serve.

Comments: A lovely campground with most sites offering nice privacy and terrific views. Even though the campground feels like it is in the wilderness it is still very close to amenities with Old Tucson being across the street and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum about 3 miles away. The Saguaro National Park Red Hills Visitor Center is about 4 miles from the campground.
Tucson Mountain Park is operated by the county and is approximately 20,000 acres and offers 62 miles of trails for hikers, mountains, and equestrians. There are a few hiking trails with access directly from the campground.
Our campsite offered great views and nice sunsets. The campground is difficult to get reservations in the winter months and is quite full but even with all the people it was very quiet and peaceful.
