Camrose RV Park – Camrose, Alberta

We spent a few weeks camping at Camrose RV Park right in the heart of town. The RV Park has full hookups and a laundry facility and is close to amenities a plenty! And it is close to friends and family. We thought we would give the relatives a chance to decouple from us for awhile to better prepare for our next onslaught of visitations!

We have stayed here before and we have found it to be perfect for our needs. I mean, we hardly hear the trains blasting through town in the middle of the night blowing their horns. Seriously, we slept right through it, as they say, “The train comes through so many times that you don’t even hear it”.

Site 523

Site 350 (right across from the laundry room)

The park offers both sites with either 50 AMP or 30AMP and dry camping sites with quite a number of pull thrus.

There is a small pond, a playground area, laundry facilities, and a Purple Martin house.

The RV Park is at the Camrose Regional Exhibition (CRE) grounds which hosts quite a number of events. If no events are occurring then the RV park is calm and peaceful and not very crowded. When events are occurring then the RV park is full. We stayed here just before the Big Valley Jamboree (BVJ) was held. BVJ is Western’s Canada’s premier country music festival which transforms Camrose into a small city for four days with live rodeos, midway fun, a trade show, and music festivities. Approximately 25,000 drunks, oops I mean people , attend and there are lots and lots and lots of motorhomes and campers as the local fields are transformed into dry camping areas.

As we camped at the RV Park we watched the area transform as the workers prepared and setup the facilities. They worked hard with setting up the main stage, the bar areas, the porrt-a-potties, the checkpoints, etc. Every day we saw a change. Besides watching the setup from our campsite we also walked around a bit to check things out.

The main stage went up last and we could see it from our campsite.

Unfortunately in 2009, just before Kevin Costner was to appear, high winds caused the collapse of the main stage and killed one person and injured many others during the performance by Billy Currington. Both Currington and his bass guitarist were injured and Costner was trapped under the stage. The concert was in the process of being cancelled and organizers were clearing the spectators out when the stage collapsed. It was very sad. Of course, the rest of the jamboree was canceled.

This year, 2024, BVJ had good weather. But on the last night Keith Urban was the headliner and just before he went on stage the organizers cancelled the event due to stormy weather. Again, the rest of the event (which was basically over anyway) was cancelled and all spectators told to return to their campsites or depart and the SHOW WAS OVER. It is a good thing they are being careful and not taking any more chances!

Our goal is to be out of the area during BVJ so we headed over to Wetaskiwin for a few days before our big campout.
