While staying at Elephant Butte State Park we decided to take the motorcycle and go visit some Ghost Towns. We had read about a group of towns out on Hwy 52 and Hwy 142, towns such as Cuchillo, Winston, and Chloride on or near Hwy 52 and Placita and Monticello on Hwy 142, so off we went.
Hwy 142 leads all the way past the quaint area of Placita and on to Monticello which has a great little town square which was built to protect the residents from attacks from the Apache. The roads turns into dirt/gravel after town and is recommended for 4WD. Obviously, being on a bike we then turned around and headed back to Hwy 52 to proceed on our journey.
Cuchillo is also a quaint ghost town with all sorts of photographic possibilities. We need to spend more time walking around this town.
We continued on and came to Winston, the last town before Chloride.
Not much further and we were in Chloride, an absolutely charming town full of history. Mr. and Mrs. Edmund visited the place in the 1980’s and fell in love with the area and over time purchased many of the buildings and lovingly restored them. It is a terrific place to visit and they even have an RV park. We visited the Pioneer Store Museum and spent most of the day visiting this charming town.
