We drove from Tok, Alaska to Dawson City, Yukon and traveled the “Top of the World” highway. It is about 127 kilometers long and one of the most northerly highways in the world and is only open in the summer. As with any northern route be sure to check the highway 511 road conditions to make sure it is in good enough condition to travel. Roads may be being maintained due to washouts and closed or they could be being graded. You never know.
Along the way we stopped for a visit in Chicken and then spent the night at a BLM campground before proceeding on to Dawson City. A wonderful highway with incredible scenery. It is very difficult to capture on “film” so to speak.
Campground: Walker Fork BLM Campground
Location: In Alaska on Top of the World Highway east of Chicken
Cost: $10
Services: Dry camp
Comments: A big overgrown but still a great stopping point for the evening when driving the Top of the World highway. Many of the sites are pull-thrus.
