Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping – Freeport, Maine

Casco Bay Maine
Beautiful Casco Bay in Maine

Just north of Portland in Maine is the small town of Freeport which is home to lots of shopping but is also home to Wolfe’s Neck Center and their Oceanfront Camping. We had read lots of good reviews about this place so we decided to visit and stay a few nights or more.  It was a lovely location with a great, peaceful setting which was perfect for a few days of camping and sightseeing.

The camping consists of 4 different campgrounds of which 2 of them are for tents (Quiet Cove and Middle Bay), one of them is more oriented to families (West Bay), and the other campground has hookups but no ocean views due to the trees (East Bay). There is a dump station on site and potable water in multiple places around the campgrounds.

Campground: Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping – East Bay
Location: Freeport, Maine (about 5 miles south of town)
Site: 412 (back-in)
Cost: $45
Services: W/E (30 AMP)
Comments: A bit of a tired campground but our loop had water and electricity and beautiful views so what more do you need.  The sites came in all different sizes and shapes and many were fairly level. The sites were gravel and with the rain it became a bit messy but hey, we’re camping!  Our site had excellent WiFi!!

The sites in East Bay are either in the trees or are out in the meadow and many sites have hookups.

The Middle Bay campground is for tents and is in the trees and had some fantastic views of Casco Bay. It was beautiful!

West Bay Campground has all open sites and some play equipment for children. There are some sites with terrific ocean views. This is the area they call the family campground.

Next to the campgrounds is the Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and The Environment which is a non profit demonstration farm.  There is an Livestock Education Barn, the Farm Office, The Farm Store, and the Farm Camp there and the new organic dairy barn is just down the road.  You are free to walk around the area, go into the barns, and check everything out. There are demonstrations on-going at different times of the year with the goal being to educate people about the food they eat and where it comes from.

Wolfe’s Neck State Park is just a short distance away and has a few very nice hiking trails along Casco Bay.

All in all, this is a lovely campground in a terrific setting. Our camp host was very gracious and kind and welcoming. The staff at the office/registration were not.  We had asked about a late checkout.  Check-out is 11am and check-in is 1pm.  We thought we could maybe stay another hour or so and they told us no, not without paying for another night’s stay.  The campgrounds were pretty much empty. There might have been 5 or 6 other campers and they can hold 130 or so.  Their explanation was that another person could rent our site and check-in was 1pm. So? We can leave by noon.  They still said no.  Even if we could have parked in one of their huge parking lots for an hour it would have helped us but they were unwilling. Therefore we are going to give their customer service a negative rating. If the campground was full we could completely understand or if there was no extra space anywhere we could understand OR if they actually cleaned/groomed the campsites before each arrival but they don’t.   We were perplexed. Welcome to Maine!
