One of the reasons for staying at Cobscook Bay State Park was not only because it had great reviews but because it was on our way to the Maritimes and Newfoundland, it provided easy access to Lubec, Maine, the eastern most town in the USA, easy access to the the eastern most point at the West Quoddy Lighthouse, and also easy access to Campobello Island, New Brunswick which is one of the Fundy Islands and has the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, used to summer in a cottage on Campobello Island. The cottage and surrounding area is now a park with a large number of hiking/biking trails, a visitors center, and of course, the cottage which can be toured during the summer. There is also an event to have “Tea with Eleanor” where an actress dresses up like Eleanor Roosevelt and describes how she spent her summers in the cottage.
Campobello Island
There is a short bridge which connects Lubec, Maine to Campobello Island, New Brunswick with border patrol on each side of the bridge so bring your passports. Campobello Island is a small island with the International Park, a few small villages and harbors, a few restaurants, and a variety of summer tourist activities. There are ferries to the island which are seasonal. We drove across and enjoyed a delightful day touring the island.
Lubec, Maine
Lubec is a lovely, small town which offers great views and a variety of restaurants and of course, the library for doing our internet things.
About 10 minutes from Lubec sits the West Quoddy Lighthouse which is the eastern most point in the USA. It is a lovely striped lighthouse and well worth the visit.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time in this lovely part of the world! Now we are off to the Maritimes and Newfoundland!!!
